Zimbabwe to chair COMESA in 2026 as President Mnangagwa takes leadership role

Story by ZBC Reporter

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has been elected the incoming Chairperson of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), with Zimbabwe set to host next year’s summit, a major diplomatic milestone that underscores the country’s growing influence in regional economic affairs.

This comes after the President’s participation at the Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, this Thursday, where the rallying call was the need to unlock COMESA’s potential through paying attention to non-tariff barriers, infrastructure gaps, and policy misalignments.

Stakeholders agreed to re-double efforts in the implementation of key initiatives such as the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Free Trade Area and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa has since returned home, and he was welcomed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by the two Vice Presidents General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga and Colonel (Rtd) Kembo Mohadi, Cabinet Ministers, Service Chiefs and Senior government officials.
