AFRICAN cricket administrators have unveiled plans for a new T20 tri-series featuring South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, in a move aimed at strengthening the sport’s commercial appeal and competitive depth across the continent.

The proposal was tabled during the ICC Africa Regional Conference held in Namibia, with organisers targeting a soft launch in August.

In a further boost to regional cricket, officials also outlined plans for a six-team Africa Cup, which will include the three nations alongside qualifiers from regional tournaments, broadening participation and development pathways.

Most of the matches are expected to be staged in Namibia, as part of efforts to give the hosts consistent exposure to high-level competition ahead of their upcoming global commitments.

Cricket authorities believe the involvement of Full Members South Africa and Zimbabwe will be critical in attracting sponsorship and broadcast deals, particularly after previous editions of the Africa Cup struggled to secure sustainable funding.

The inaugural edition of the tri-series is expected to be hosted at the Mosi oa Tunya Stadium, currently under construction in Victoria Falls, marking a significant milestone for Zimbabwe’s sports infrastructure development.
