ZIMBABWE and France have reaffirmed their commitment to enhance cooperation in various sectors that include education, renewable energy investment and culture.

The French Embassy in Harare hosted Bastille Day commemorations this Friday, marking the enduring ties between the two nations.

The event also celebrated the ruby jubilee of the French school in Zimbabwe, which turns 40 in 2025.

Speaking at the event, French Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Paul-Bertrand Barets, highlighted the pillars underpinning the strong relationship between the two countries.

“This friendly relationship is also visible from our French community in Zimbabwe and we are also happy to be in your country. Our French school, which will commemorate 40 years this year, reflects this enduring presence. The French alliances in Harare and Bulawayo will keep alive linguistic and cultural relationships amongst many events throughout the year, such as the successful Jazz festival in September and cultural events between Francophone countries.”

Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Honourable Sheillah Chikomo, reaffirmed the importance of deepening bilateral engagements with France.

“Zimbabwe and France enjoy cordial and longstanding bilateral relations rooted in respect and a shared commitment to multilateralism, development cooperation and peace. In recent years, we have noted a welcome resurgence to our diplomatic and economic engagements. France has been instrumental in supporting key sectors, including health, agriculture, education, renewable energy, and cultural heritage. As highlighted, we proudly celebrate 40 years of excellent bilateral cooperation.”

France has supported Zimbabwe in many projects including the Great Zimbabwe Development Project, which was funded to the tune of €3 million, with the aim of promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism development while preserving Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage.
