Zimbabwe celebrates women powering healthcare system

WOMEN remain the backbone of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system, accounting for more than 85 percent of the workforce and playing a central role in service delivery, from frontline care to institutional leadership.

This came to the fore on Friday as Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals hosted a high tea to honour the contribution of women in the medical profession, highlighting their enduring impact across the sector.

Across the country, women continue to dominate key roles in healthcare, providing round-the-clock care in wards, leading complex medical procedures and shaping policy and administration.

Principal Nursing Officer, Ms Nomazulu Mpande, said recognising women in healthcare is critical, particularly given their numerical and functional dominance in the profession.

“This is a very important day for the women in our hospital, especially the nurses. The majority of nurses are women and this event encourages them, showing that they are important in delivering services to the nation,” she said.

“It also motivates them when they are recognised and empowers junior staff who are coming on board as future leaders.”

Oncologist, Dr Anna Mary Nyakabau, noted that women are increasingly assuming leadership roles while remaining actively involved in patient care.

“Most healthcare workers are women and many of them are leaders in healthcare. They are directly involved in patient care. At Parirenyatwa Hospital, we also have a woman leading the institution, and this demonstrates the leadership role women continue to play in the sector,” she said.

Chief Medical Officer for Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Dr Tsitsi Mugure, said the scale of women’s contribution underscores the need for continued recognition and support.

“This day is dedicated to celebrating women who are contributing significantly at different levels in the health sector. More than 85 percent of health workers are women and they play a key role in delivering successful outcomes,” she said.

Despite operating under demanding conditions, women across Zimbabwe’s healthcare system continue to sustain service delivery, often working long hours while maintaining high standards of patient care.

Officials say their contribution extends beyond clinical duties to shaping the future of the sector through leadership, mentorship and innovation.

As the healthcare system evolves, the role of women remains central, reinforcing calls for sustained investment, recognition and empowerment within the profession.
