ZIMBABWE has made an impressive start to its Davis Cup Africa Zone Four campaign in Kenya, taking an early lead against Mozambique in their opening tie as they seek an immediate return to Africa Zone Three.
Ronan Mtisi put Zimbabwe ahead after producing a commanding performance to defeat Mozambique’s Eric Sigauque in straight sets.
The Zimbabwean needed just over an hour to seal a comprehensive 6-1, 6-0 victory, giving his side a crucial 1-0 advantage and setting the tone for the rest of the encounter.
The emphatic win highlights Zimbabwe’s determination to bounce back from relegation last year and launch a strong promotion bid in Nairobi.
Attention now turns to Zimbabwe’s top-ranked player, Courtney Lock, who is set to face Luca Figuieredo in the second singles match.
A victory for Lock would place Zimbabwe firmly in control of the tie ahead of the doubles encounter and move the team closer to securing maximum points from its opening fixture.
Zimbabwe is competing in Pool B alongside Botswana, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the top two teams progressing to the promotion play-offs.
With a strong start already secured, Zimbabwe will be aiming to maintain its momentum as it pursues a swift return to Africa Zone Three.
