THE 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to deliver drama across North America, with Group G emerging as the tournament’s most evenly balanced pool with all four teams level on points after Matchday One.

Group G got underway with a tense and tactical encounter between Belgium and Egypt on Monday evening, with the two sides settling for a one-all draw.

In a contest dominated by defensive discipline and missed chances, neither side managed to gain a decisive advantage, as they walked away with a valuable point to keep their hopes alive heading into Matchday Two.

The drama continued early this Tuesday morning as Iran and New Zealand produced one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament, sharing the spoils in a thrilling two-all draw.

The encounter had everything from early goals to momentum swings, and late drama that kept supporters on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

New Zealand and Iran top group G, while Belgium and Egypt occupy the bottom two positions.

With all four teams sitting on a point, Group G remains the most tightly contested pool at the tournament.

In Group H, Saudi Arabia produced a resilient performance to hold two-time world champions Uruguay to a one-all draw.

Abdulelah Al-Amri fired the Saudis into the lead in the 41st minute before Maximiliano Araújo restored parity for Uruguay ten minutes from time.

The other Group H fixture also ended level as Spain and Cape Verde played out a goalless draw, leaving the group finely poised ahead of the next round of matches.

Attention now turns to another major test for African football this Tuesday evening as two-time African champions Senegal take on 2018 FIFA World Cup winners France in a blockbuster Group I encounter at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The Lions of Teranga will be hoping to follow in Côte d’Ivoire’s footsteps and demonstrate that African nations are increasingly capable of challenging football’s traditional powers on the grandest stage of all.
