A 29-year-old supervisor at a Harare-based plastics manufacturing company has appeared in court facing theft charges after allegedly embezzling US$150 000 from his employer over a 17-month period.

Tatenda Chiponda, a supervisor at TNT Plastics, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday accused of stealing company funds between January 2025 and May 2026.

According to the State, Chiponda allegedly misappropriated the money by falsifying financial records after receiving cash from company cashiers.

Prosecutors told the court that Chiponda’s responsibilities included paying suppliers, purchasing stock and receiving cash collections from cashiers on behalf of the company.

The alleged fraud came to light after the company’s owner, Gaudancia Khumbula, became concerned about irregularities in the firm’s financial records and ordered an audit.

The audit reportedly uncovered discrepancies that led to the discovery of the alleged theft amounting to US$150 000.

Chiponda was remanded in custody pending further investigations and is expected to return to court on July 16.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the matter.
