Bulawayo’s ZITF Grounds undergo major commercial transformation

THE Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) grounds are undergoing a major transformation into a year-round economic and commercial hub, with construction of a modern shopping mall now underway in a move expected to unlock new investment opportunities, create jobs and stimulate business activity in Bulawayo.

The development is set to reposition the country’s premier exhibition venue from a once-a-year trade showcase into a vibrant commercial destination that supports entrepreneurs, traders and investors throughout the year.

For small-scale traders such as 40-year-old Chrispen Matsika, who earns much of his annual income during the week-long Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, the project represents a significant opportunity to expand business beyond the annual exhibition period.

“I make the most money during trade fair week because there are local and international visitors. The fact that most buildings lie idle when it is not fair week does not make sense, so I think what they are doing will empower us as Bulawayo vendors to make a living because this spot is not as busy as the ZITF stalls,” he said.

Heavy earth-moving equipment has already been deployed at the site as construction begins on the multi-million-dollar retail development.

ZITF Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nicholas Ndebele, said the shopping mall forms part of the organisation’s long-term master plan aimed at broadening revenue streams and maximising the utilisation of the exhibition grounds.

“We are excited that the project to transform ZITF into a state-of-the-art facility has commenced. In our grand master plan, we have the mall as one of the projects we are embarking on to broaden our revenue as a business.

“We are excited to see our vision being brought to life. The developer is Terrace Africa. Earth-moving equipment is on site preparing the ground,” he said.

The business community has welcomed the development, citing its potential to stimulate economic growth and attract increased commercial activity to the city.

“As a businessperson, I believe the mall will boost economic activity in the city as well as create employment opportunities for people from the region,” said community member Brian Samuriwo.

Another resident, Mr Tonderai Rice, said the project is likely to strengthen Bulawayo’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

“This mall will bring a lot of traffic to the city, especially for us in the tourism sector. We will have more visitors coming to the city,” he said.

For traders such as Matsika, the success of the development will ultimately be measured by its ability to generate sustained business opportunities beyond the annual trade fair season.

The transformation of the ZITF grounds is expected to broaden economic opportunities for small-scale traders, enhance investment prospects and reinforce Bulawayo’s position as one of Zimbabwe’s leading centres for commerce, trade and industry.
