Zimbabwe abolishes death penalty

Story by ZBC News Reporter

ZIMBABWE has abolished the death penalty through the Death Penalty Abolition Act.

In a government gazette published this Tuesday, government said no court shall impose a sentence of death upon a person for any offence.

The government clarified that courts will instead impose other competent sentences appropriate in the circumstances of the case.

Under the new act, the Supreme Court shall not confirm a sentence of death imposed upon an appellant, whenever that sentence may have been imposed.

It will instead substitute it with other competent sentences appropriate in the circumstances of the case.

Zimbabwe has not conducted an execution since 2005, with various organisations and individuals supporting the abolition of the death penalty.
