THE Zimbabwe national rugby team, the Sables, is in a buoyant mood ahead of the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup which kicks off on July 8, in Uganda.
The Sables are out to defend their title at the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup which runs from July 8 to 19, at Mandela National Stadium, in Namboole.
Zimbabwe arrived in the East African nation on Saturday and immediately went down to business as they seek a good start to the tournament where they will face off against Madagascar in the tournament opener.
This time winning the African crown comes with huge incentives as it will mean qualification for the 2026 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
“Winning the tournament this time is everything, it means World Cup qualification, it also means we leave something for the next generation of players,” Sables Prop, Brian Makamure said.
“As defending champions it is really important that we maintain good habits however we cannot also be complacent because everyone is working hard to improve,” Sables Hooker, Matthew Mandioma said.
The Sables have retained most of the 2024 championship-winning squad but also added a few influential players.
Backrower Matthew McNab, combative Jason Fraser, and kicking stalwart Lenience Tambwera make their return to the Sables squad.
