Zim records e-mobility successes

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) cruising the country’s roads has skyrocketed to nearly 3 000, marking a significant leap in the nation’s green transportation journey.

Statistics released by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development this Monday show that the country has to date imported 2 883 electric vehicles.

This development has excited the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) which has pledged to do more in raising awareness on the adoption of e-vehicles.

ZERA chief executive officer, Mr. Edington Mazambani said, “There has been a considerable increase in the number of e-vehicles coming into the country; 100 percent electric vehicles and a lot coming in as hybrid vehicles and these are the most that are coming into the country. The increase in e-vehicles is because of the campaigns we have been doing. Already there are distributors and those that offer support services for such vehicles in the country.”

He also highlighted efforts being made to set up support services for e-vehicles in the country.

“We do have charging pots at our Harare offices, Mutare offices, and Bulawayo offices. We are in the process of installing a charging station in Gweru, which we fill is midway through Harare-Bulawayo,” he said.

Zimbabwe’s e-mobility journey is a shining example of how innovative policies and strategic implementation can drive positive change.

Available information shows that with continued commitment and innovation, Zimbabwe is poised to become a leader in Africa’s e-mobility revolution, reaping the benefits of cleaner air, a thriving economy, and a sustainable future for all.

Electronic vehicles have a lower carbon footprint, and this puts Zimbabwe in a better position on the global emissions scale.

The hybrid vehicles emit less and the e-vehicles have zero emissions in addition to consuming less fuel than fossil fuel vehicles.
