ZIMBABWE’S martial arts icon, Shihan Wilfred Mashaya, has once again put the country on the global stage after scooping multiple accolades at the World Humanitarian Martial Arts Festival in Montenegro this Sunday.

Mashaya, popularly known as the Zim Ninja, walked away with three international awards, the highlight being the Weapon Champion of the Year Award, presented by Festival Director Grand Master Predrag Lazarevic. He also received special recognition from European Grand Masters representing Poland and Portugal.

The decorated martial artist was the only African representative at the elite gathering, where his mastery of the Okinawan art of Kobudo, along with his expertise in Bujinkan Ninjutsu and Kyokushin Karate, earned him high praise.

The festival was held under the theme “Stop Suicide” to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, adding humanitarian significance to the martial arts showcase.

Mashaya’s latest honours extend his already impressive track record, which includes awards and titles from Russia, Spain, Italy, Germany, Serbia, England, Poland, and Portugal. Earlier this year, he clinched five gold medals in an international tournament in England and was inducted into the International Poland Hall of Fame Budo Bushi in January.

Looking ahead, Mashaya is now preparing 20 students from his Zim Ninja Academy to represent Zimbabwe at the ICO World Championships in the United Kingdom this October, a feat dependent on sponsorship support.

“Zimbabwe has immense martial arts talent. My mission is to ensure these students carry our flag with pride and bring home medals,” he said before his return home this week.

Shihan Mashaya’s recognition as Africa’s sole Weapon Master further cements Zimbabwe’s growing influence in the global martial arts arena.
