Zebra Kiss bus driver gets 2 years for reckless driving

Story by Peter Chivhima, Courts Reporter

Rimbi bus driver Misheck Penyai who was arrested early this year, is expected to hear his fate before Mtoko Magistrates court this afternoon for reckless driving.

Meanwhile, Penyai’s co-accused and Zebra Kiss bus driver Mika Makwara was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with his driver’s licence cancelled, when he appeared at the Mtoko Magistrates court on Monday for reckless driving.

Penyai and Makwara were arrested early this year after a video of two speeding buses circulated on social media platforms while one of the victims was recording the race.

The fatal accident occurred along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway after Penyai, who was driving the Rimbi bus, tried to overtake Makwara who was driving the Zebra Kiss bus.

Penyai hit the rear end of a tipper truck which was also travelling towards Nyamapanda.

Investigations by police revealed that the buses were racing each other while putting the lives of passengers in danger.

Due to their reckless driving, the government suspended the operating licences of the two bus operators, but the suspension would be uplifted a few days later.
