Zambia combats cholera outbreak: National stadium converted to treatment centre

Zambia combats cholera outbreak: National stadium converted to treatment centre

Story by Vivian Bengamu

ZAMBIA has turned its iconic Heroes Stadium in the capital Lusaka, into a cholera treatment centre.

The move comes after Zambia recorded more than 15,000 cholera cases and close to 600 deaths since the beginning of the rainy season in October last year.

The cases were recorded mostly in the hotspot of Lusaka.

Zambia’s treatment drive comes as over five SADC member states battling the cholera outbreak have rolled out the oral vaccination programme.

Statistics indicate that Zambia has experienced cholera outbreaks at least 30 times since 1977, with aid agencies saying the latest is the worst since 2017.

SADC Heads of State are set to discuss the cholera outbreak within the region this Friday and chart the way forward.
