YOUNG people from across Mashonaland West converged at Gwebi Agricultural College on Unity Day, using sport as a platform to promote national cohesion, peaceful coexistence and positive youth engagement.

Football, netball and athletics competitions brought together youths from diverse social and political backgrounds, reinforcing the values of teamwork, discipline and mutual respect that underpin the spirit of Unity Day.

Participants said the event demonstrated the power of sport to transcend differences and foster a shared sense of national identity.

“Unity Day means a lot to us, and sport brings everyone together as one. On the field we forget our differences and work as a team, which strengthens peace and togetherness in our communities,” a participant said.

“Taking part in sports keeps us busy and focused, and it helps us stay away from drugs and substance abuse. When we are engaged in positive activities like this, we choose a healthy and responsible lifestyle,” Rudo Munyonga said.

“This tournament has helped us meet other youths from different areas and share ideas. Through sports, we are building networks, friendships, and opportunities that can help us grow together as young people,” a youth said.

ZANU PF Mashonaland West youth leadership, led by Zvimba East legislator Honourable Decide Manhanzva, says the event was meant to remind young people of the values of unity and cooperation that define a nation.

“Today’s Unity Day sports gala is a clear demonstration that sport has the power to bring our young people together regardless of background or affiliation. As leaders, we are promoting unity, discipline, and teamwork, while at the same time steering youths away from drug and substance abuse. We are also using platforms like this to identify and nurture talent, because through sport we are building a united, healthy and productive generation,” he said.

“As young people, we are happy to celebrate Unity Day through sport because it brings us together as one family. On the field, there are no divisions; we play as a team, we respect each other, and we build friendships. Events like this keep us busy and focused, and help us stay away from drugs while discovering and developing our talents,” ZANU PF Mash West Youth League, Political Commissar, Cde Ertbetry Mbauwa said.

The Unity Day sports initiative aligns with Government’s broader view of sport as a unifying force capable of strengthening social cohesion, promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging young people to play an active role in national development.
