US top diplomat arrives in Zimbabwe

Story by Bruce Chahwanda

UNITED States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Robert Scott has arrived in Zimbabwe and is expected to hold engagements with government and civil society organizations.

Ambassador Scott arrived this afternoon at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare, where he indicated that his visit is primarily to engage stakeholders for peaceful and inclusive elections.

Ambassador Scott said, ‘‘I am pleased to be here, I am here to engage in a series of meetings with government, civil society, and other actors in the political socio-economic spheres. I am also here to listen and also pass our hopes from the US specifically for peaceful and inclusive elections. That will be the primary goal of my visit.’’

Zimbabwe is set to hold harmonised elections this year and the United States has a history of interfering in the country’s internal processes.

The United States of America also imposed illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium, in a move that has stalled the country’s economic growth prospects.
