Unlikely pacesetters defy expectations

NORTON-based side, MWOS, have become unlikely pacesetters in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League after shooting to the top of the log.

Had it not been for a window that came for Norton-based side, MWOS to acquire a ZPC Hwange franchise, the current Castle Lager Premier Soccer League log leaders would have been playing in the Division One league.

MWOS’s journey to the Premiership was not a walk in the park as they finished last season as Northern region runners-up losing the title to Scotland Football Club, but found an alternative route by acquiring the ZPC Hwange franchise.

Getting into the top flight, MWOS have done extremely well occupying the top spot with 14 points, a point above Ngezi Platinum.

They kicked off the season with a 1-0 victory over Highlanders, followed by a draw with Bikita Minerals and wins over Yadah and FC Platinum.

The Punters are proving to be the early pacesetters, unbeaten in six matches and riding high in confidence.

Billy Veremu has been a key player, scoring three goals, including two headers.

Another star for MWOS so far this season is Salif Cheya, who scored the winning goal against Highlanders in their debut match.

Lloyd Mutasa has led his charges effectively, and goalkeeper Martin Mapisa has been instrumental with four clean sheets in five appearances.

MWOS’ strong frontline is complemented by a solid defence, making them a force to be reckoned with.

As they continue their campaign, they will face stiff competition from Ngezi Platinum who are hot on their heels and Northern region rivals Scottland and defending champions Simba Bhora who are all within striking distance of the top spot.

The league is heating up, with Telone and Manica Diamonds also in the mix.

Can MWOS maintain their momentum and challenge for the title? Well, only time will tell, but one thing is certain the Punters are a team to watch.
