Uncapped Tapiwa Mufudza named in Chevron’s squad to face Sri Lanka

CHEVRON’s interim technical department has named the squad to take on Sri Lanka in a limited over series this month set for Colombo in the Asian country.

Uncapped bowler, Tapiwa Mufudza has been included in the squad for three matches in Sri Lanka this January.

The Chevrons will be under the guidance of caretaker coach Walter Chawaguta after Dave Houghton quit last month, citing “a loss of the changing room” following a series of disappointing results.

A 33-year-old offspinner, Mufudza got the nod after consistently impressive performances at the domestic level.

Pace bowler, Faraz Akram, who has only played international cricket in the T20 side, is also in line to make his ODI debut.

Craig Ervine is back to lead the side after missing the home series against Ireland in December due to injury, but Sean Williams has failed to fully recover in time to make it to Sri Lanka.

Apart from the skipper, Zimbabwe will be counting on the experience of all-rounders Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl as well as the pace duo of Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani as they seek to upset the hosts.

Zimbabwe will also play three T20l matches in Colombo with Mufudza, Akram and Takudzwanashe Kaitano dropping out and Brian Bennett, Carl Mumba and Ainsley Ndlovu taking their places.

The ODI matches are scheduled for January 6, 8 and 11 and the T20I matches are set for January 14, 16 and 18 all in Colombo.
