TEAM Zimbabwe has delivered a breakthrough performance at the AUSC Region 5 Gymnastics Youth Games in Namibia, claiming gold in the inaugural Gym For Life category, a segment introduced for the first time, and unexpectedly added at the very last minute.

Despite the abrupt inclusion, Zimbabwe’s young rhythmic gymnasts, led by Runako Kundishora rose to the challenge with a spirited, creative and beautifully synchronised routine that set them apart on the regional stage.

The Gym For Life category does not measure technical difficulty alone but also celebrates artistic expression, teamwork and performance presence.

Zimbabwe’s routine ticked all those boxes, blending contemporary dance elements with gymnastics precision, earning praise from judges and putting the country on the top step of the podium.

Their success was part of a broader, impressive showing across multiple levels and age groups.

In the Level 4 segment, Atara Peters delivered a memorable free dance routine that secured her a bronze medal after producing a standout performance marked by confidence, rhythm and artistic refinement.

Peters also teamed up with Ruth Mataranyika in the Level 4 overall rankings, where the duo’s consistency and composure earned Zimbabwe a silver medal, further boosting the nation’s medal haul.

The senior athletes added their own mark of distinction, with Kundishora, Tusime Zengeni, and Taropafadzwa Mpofu claiming bronze in the overall senior standings.

Their routines showcased strength, mature artistry and dependable technique, which are all critical components at this competitive stage.

The country’s junior group delivered an energetic and well-structured performance that earned them bronze, while the Senior Group dazzled with a polished and commanding routine that secured gold, underscoring the exceptional talent emerging from the nation’s training programmes.

Beyond individual and group successes, Zimbabwe had even bigger reasons to celebrate as the overall senior team won the bronze medal for the entire tournament, finishing behind Namibia, who took silver and South Africa, who clinched gold.

For a team competing in a field traditionally dominated by South Africa and Namibia, the overall bronze marks a significant achievement and a major step forward in Zimbabwe’s gymnastics development pathway.

The Juniors team also showed Zimbabwe’s growing strength in gymnastics after clinching silver in the overall ratings, with Namibia getting the gold.
