THE Supreme Court has reserved judgment in an appeal made by 12 CCC parliamentary candidates challenging the High Court’s decision barring them from participating in the general elections this month.
The Court will this Thursday pass judgment after the 12 candidates were disqualified from participating in the August 23 general elections after they filed their nomination papers after the 4 pm deadline on the 21st of June.
A three-panel bench presided over the matter this Wednesday.
The 12 CCC candidates were disqualified following an application by registered voters, arguing that their nomination was unprocedural after they missed the nomination cut-off time.
Through their lawyers, the 12 argued that the High Court had no jurisdiction to hear the matter, hence its findings should be set aside.
They further argued that the Electoral Court was the right court to have heard the matter as it is a specialised court meant to hear electoral disputes.
The respondents however argued that the appeal by the 12 had no merit and had to be thrown out as the applicants had submitted their nomination papers late.
