Supreme Court clears 12 CCC aspiring legislators to contest

Story by Fungai Jachi

THE Supreme Court has cleared 12 Citizens Coalition for Change national assembly candidates to contest in the August 23 General Election after a three-panel bench granted their appeal.

Speaking after the court proceedings, CCC National Spokesperson Advocate Fadzayi Mahere said the judgment has come as a relief to the opposition party.

“The court has ruled that the High Court’s decision should be set aside which means that the 12 candidates will now be reinstated on the ballot. This has come as a relief to us as the people of Bulawayo will be given a chance to choose a representative of their choice,” she said.

The three-judge panel decision was unanimous after taking into consideration the arguments of all parties.

The appeal was granted with costs, but the full reasons for the Supreme Court’s decision are yet to be availed.

The High Court had earlier disqualified the 12 aspiring legislators indicating that they had submitted their nomination papers after the deadline.

The 12 CCC candidates have become the latest to win an appeal after UZA presidential candidate Elisabeth Valerio also won her appeal to join the presidential race.
