Sudan conflict: Zim evacuates nationals

By ZBC Reporter

The government says it has begun an exercise to evacuate Zimbabwean nationals in Sudan after a conflict broke out in the country on the 15th of this month.

In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade spokesperson, Mr Livit Mugejo said they are closely monitoring the situation in Sudan.

He added that an estimated 100 Zimbabweans resident in Sudan are safe, but some have indicated their desire to return home.

According to Mr Mugejo, the government has managed to secure buses to evacuate the nationals to the Port of Sudan in a UN convoy.

The closure of airports has, however, affected the ability to bring the nationals home.

Meanwhile, a contingency fund has already been disbursed to the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Sudan to facilitate the evacuation of affected nationals.

Zimbabwe now joins other nations which have begun evacuating nationals from Sudan following the onset of the conflict.

The United Nations has maintained its call for conflict resolution and an immediate cessation of violence that spread from the capital Khartoum and other parts of the country.
