Student innovations drive industrial momentum at Gweru Polytechnic

WORKSHOPS once confined to technical instruction are steadily transforming into production hubs at Gweru Polytechnic, where student-led innovations are contributing to Zimbabwe’s broader industrial development agenda.

Operating under the Education 5.0 framework, higher and tertiary institutions are expected to move beyond theory and produce market-ready goods and services that directly support economic growth. At Gweru Polytechnic, this shift is increasingly visible in engineering bays and fabrication workshops where students, alongside lecturers, are designing and assembling precision engineering components, automotive systems and agro-processing machinery.

Among the notable innovations are a multi-purpose engine-drawn plough, an automated heavy-duty jack stand and mobile solar compressors projects developed by students with practical industrial exposure.

Engineering students say the hands-on approach is reshaping their career outlook.

“I am an engineering student, and what I plan to do is open my own enterprise after this. There has been space for us ladies to venture into areas once reserved for men. Our innovations are informed by the needs of local industry, and we are focusing on producing equipment that can be manufactured and maintained locally,” one student said.

Another added: “The projects we are working on expose us to real industrial processes, which prepare us to start enterprises. I invented these mobile solar compressors to better the lives of motorists and mechanics. They use both conventional and modern hydraulic systems.”

During a review tour of the institution’s projects, the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Ambassador Frederick Shava, underscored the strategic role of polytechnics in the country’s industrialisation drive.

“Polytechnics are central to industrialisation because they produce technologies and skills that feed directly into the productive sectors of the economy. You are doing projects that are people-centred. Be it in terms of the food systems, in automobile working with the communities, links with education 5.0, which speaks into that communities benefit from the tertiary expertise,” Ambassador Shava said.

With the government encouraging institutions to convert research and technical expertise into industrial output, such institutions are steadily positioning themselves as key players in Zimbabwe’s innovation ecosystem.

The tour cast the spotlight on the growing expectation for polytechnics to move beyond prototype development towards full-scale production and structured commercialisation frameworks.

Other issues include the need for stronger industry partnerships, improved access to capital for student-led enterprises and certification pathways that allow locally developed machinery to compete in formal markets.

Intellectual property protection, standardisation of products and scaling renewable energy innovations to support rural industrialisation are also on the government’s priority list in the endeavour to stir industrial growth.
