Sports key in fighting drug and substance abuse

AS the government and its stakeholders intensify the fight against drug and substance abuse, sports and other recreational activities have been identified as vital tools in keeping young people engaged and productive.

This comes after a two-day sports gala was held in Gutu Central at the weekend at Mushayavanhu Secondary School and Paradise Grounds, bringing together more than 30 soccer and netball teams.

The event, dubbed the Gutu Central Constituency Sports Tournament, sought to raise awareness against drug and substance abuse, while nurturing local sporting talent.

“As youths of Gutu Central, we are happy to participate in this tournament, which gave us a platform to meet, play, and learn about the dangers of drug abuse while showcasing our talent,” a participant, Simbarashe Chinhondo said.

“This platform is important for us because it unites young people. Through sports and networking, we get to discuss challenges affecting us, including sharing business ideas as rural youths,” another, Drogba Mudziwapasi, added.

Community leaders hailed the government’s continued support towards community sports initiatives, saying they are key to addressing the drug and substance abuse crisis.

“Drug and substance abuse has become a menace even in rural communities. Such tournaments help us teach youths about its dangers. We thank the government for promoting sports that keep our young people occupied,” Councillor Proud Chifamba said.

“Every ward now has a netball and football team that accommodates all age groups. These activities keep people engaged, especially during the summer season, and promote unity and health,” Honourable Zvarevashe Masvingise weighed in.

Area legislator, Honourable Winston Chitando urged youths to channel their energy into productive and life-changing activities.

“Sporting activities promote healthy lifestyles. Through this tournament, we aim to bring youths together, give them a platform to showcase their talent, and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. We have equipped all teams with kits and plan to develop more recreational facilities across the constituency to keep youths active and away from drugs.”

Earlier, Honourable Chitando commissioned a new basketball court at Dewure High School, where he strongly condemned drug abuse, describing it as a major obstacle to youth and national development.

All participating teams were awarded, with outstanding performers walking away with various prizes.

Government continues to roll out several programmes to curb drug and substance abuse, including establishing rehabilitation centres, developing youth-friendly recreational facilities, and intensifying nationwide awareness campaigns.
