South Africa aims to broaden farm export markets

THE Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz) has emphasised the importance of expanding export destinations to strengthen the country’s agricultural trade. Agbiz Chief Economist Wandile Sihlobo highlighted the potential for growth in new markets, particularly in the Middle East.

According to Wandile Sihlobo, Saudi Arabia imports US$25 billion worth of agricultural products annually. Similarly, the UAE and Qatar offer substantial potential, with South Africa’s current 2 per cent market share in each indicating room for considerable expansion.

Proactive marketing and stronger cooperation between government and industry can help overcome trade barriers and unlock this untapped potential, highlighted Agbiz Chief Economist.

South Africa’s agricultural exports have shown strong performance, reaching US$13.7 billion in 2024, which is a 3 per cent year-on-year increase. While nearly half of these exports go to African markets.

As reported by African News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, amid evolving global trade dynamics, maintaining strong relationships with existing partners remains a priority. With a proactive approach to market diversification and continued investment in quality and efficiency, South Africa’s agricultural sector is well-positioned to unlock new opportunities and drive long-term growth.
