A 20-year-old man from Shurugwi who attempted to rape a 14-year-old girl as punishment for turning down his love proposal will spend eight years behind bars.
The offender was convicted by a Gweru Court.
Facts are that on August 26, at Chirasha area in Zhaugwe, Shurugwi, the offender proposed love to the victim who was on her way home.
The child refused, and he tripped her to the ground and tried to rape her.
She, however, screamed, and a passerby came to her rescue.
The offender fled the scene but was later apprehended.
The 20-year-old was initially sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, with seven years suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence for five years.
He will, however, serve an effective eight years in prison.
