Sheffield Wednesday eye second Luton Town deal amid Jerry Yates links

Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing a second swoop for a Luton Town man as Marvelous Nakamba is on their radar to hopefully follow Jerry Yates up north, according to The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday’s recent struggles have been well documented, with relegation from the Championship all but confirmed. The Owls sit bottom of the second tier, 37 points adrift of safety.

Henrik Pedersen, formerly part of Danny Rohl’s coaching staff, was handed the managerial role but has overseen just one league victory. His side most recently fell 2–0 away to Bristol City.

Despite the club’s difficulties both on and off the pitch, Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly looking to make a few moves before the end of January. SWFC are close to a move for Luton Town’s Jerry Yates and according to The Star another Hatters man is on their radar.

They are claiming that a move for Marvelous Nakamba is on the agenda in the final days of the window. The midfielder has made just one appearance for Luton this season and his contract may be terminated, allowing SWFC to sign him on a free.

A former Aston Villa player, who captains Zimbabwe alongside Owls youngster Sean Fusire in international football, has slipped down the pecking order at Luton Town. He has made just one League One appearance this season.

He has, however, completed two full matches in the EFL Trophy and three during last month’s African Cup of Nations. Nakamba boasts Premier League and Champions League experience, but knee injuries in recent years have hampered his progress.

He is now seeking a fresh start elsewhere. The holding midfielder has strong pedigree, having joined Villa from Belgian side Club Brugge in 2019 for a reported fee of around £10m.

He went on to make 68 appearances for the Midlands club before an initial loan move to Kenilworth Road. There, he played a key role in Luton’s 2023 promotion to the top tier.

That experience could be vital for Sheffield Wednesday, especially after Barry Bannan’s departure. SWFC’s young squad will need leaders to see out the campaign, and Nakamba can be just that.
