Story by Peter Chivhima
THE corruption that has rocked town house has been laid bare after the local authority’s chairperson of Environment and Management Committee, Cecelia Chimbiri lifted the lid when she appeared before the Harare City Council Commission of Enquiry.
Chimbiri made sensational allegations of deep seated corruption when she testified before the Harare City Council Commission of enquiry this Tuesday.
“Yes there is serious greediness and corruption within the Harare City Council, and no one is better. But what I know is that during the Douglas Mwonzora era officials there were so corrupt,” she said.
The commission of enquiry was taken aback after Chimbiri seemingly failed to explain the benefits of wetlands and the sprouting of fuel service stations in residential areas despite being in charge of environmental issues.
Harare City Council chairperson of the Sports Committee, Councillor Stanley Manyenga also made shocking revelations after disclosing that 130 people attended an induction workshop in Kadoma.
“Yes, we took 130 people to Kadoma for induction workshop but the decision is not on me but on the chamber secretary.”
The Harare City Council commission of enquiry is probing the operations of the local authority since 2017, amid allegations of corruption, nepotism and poor service delivery.
The five-member Commission of Inquiry is chaired by Retired High Court Judge Justice Maphios Cheda.
