SADC reaffirms call for lifting of illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe

THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) has once again united in solidarity with Zimbabwe, urging the immediate and unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed on the country.

In a statement to mark the 2025 SADC Anti-Sanctions Day, the regional body’s Executive Secretary His Excellency Elias Magosi echoed the call, emphasising that the sanctions continue to undermine Zimbabwe’s economic potential and regional integration efforts.

He noted that the sanctions, which have evolved, remain a destabilising force not only for Zimbabwe but for the entire SADC region.

“This year’s theme, ‘Inclusive Development through Heritage-based Innovation and Industrialisation, in a Multilateral World, reflects our shared commitment to sustainable growth and resilience,” he said.

He stressed that the sanctions are a direct affront to Zimbabwe’s human and peoples’ rights and contradict the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063. His Excellency Magosi also called on all 16 SADC Member States to stand firm in their support for Zimbabwe, reinforcing the region’s longstanding spirit of unity and cooperation.

He urged sanctioning entities to reconsider their stance and engage in constructive dialogue, highlighting Zimbabwe’s resilience and its potential to make a meaningful contribution to the continent’s prosperity.

As Zimbabwe commemorates the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day, the message from SADC is clear: now is the time to lift the sanctions and allow Zimbabwe to participate in regional and global development fully.
