Property developers driving urban renewal

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

GOVERNMEMNT’s urban renewal policy has received massive support from the private sector, with various structures at various levels of construction in urban local authorities such as Victoria Falls.

In an engagement with local authorities this Wednesday, the government rallied urban councils to draw up plans for renewal and modernisation to a level consistent with the vision of an upper-middle-income society by 2030.

An example is the Urban Renewal Policy launched in 2019, laying the foundation for new city designs and urban regeneration projects based on the concept of a modern and self-contained smart city.

In Victoria Falls, property developers are buying into this policy which has decentralised services from the central business district and opened a new window of opportunities for emerging businesspeople.

“We should take the lead in coming up with state-of-the-art structures as we have done here. Government’s mantra that ‘Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo’ is exactly what we have done here, we are complimenting in our own way the infrastructure development of this country,” said property developer, Mr Thomas Tafireyi.

Development experts opine that public-private partnerships are the panacea to infrastructure gaps in the country.
