THE government has reiterated the importance of monitoring and evaluating projects to ensure the country achieves its national development plans.
Speaking during a tour of the GeoPomona Waste to Energy Project in Harare this Thursday, the Special Advisor to the President on the Monitoring of Government Programmes, Dr Jorum Gumbo, said the Second Republic’s new strategic thrust of constantly assessing projects is paying off, ensuring implementation to fruition.
“As I visit this iconic project which has transformed this once filthy dumpsite, it is important to illustrate that the Second Republic paradigm shift to undertaking projects is bearing fruit.”
Accompanying Dr Jorum Gumbo was Harare Metropolitan Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Senator Charles Tawengwa who welcomed the project as a game-changer in attaining a sunshine city status.
“This is a game-changing project in our quest to create a sunshine city in line with an upper-middle-income economy.”
So far, GeoPomona Waste Management Company has cleared over 80 000 tonnes of illegal dump sites since taking over this role from the City of Harare.
“We have managed to collect over 80 000 tonnes of illegal dump sites as we continue to carry out our mandate of clearing illegal dump sites across the city and we are acquiring more refuse collection trucks to intensify this critical role,” GeoPomona’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairperson, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya stated.
In the next 18 to 24 months, the project will be putting at least 22 megawatts into the national grid once the waste-to-energy plant whose construction has now started is complete.
