President Mnangagwa consoles recent flood victims as rescue efforts intensify

Story by Oleen Ndori

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has extended his condolences to the families impacted by the recent rainfall-induced disasters across Zimbabwe.

In a statement issued via the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, President Mnangagwa expressed his deep sorrow over the unprecedented destruction caused by the recent rains.

The disasters have severely affected essential infrastructure, including schools, healthcare facilities, homes, roads, and bridges, resulting in the tragic loss of life.

He added that while some regions have faced the brunt of the devastation, every area is grappling with the severe consequences of flooding and as such, the Department of Civil Protection in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Sub Aqua Unit and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces is actively engaged in search and rescue operations, highlighting the vital role of communities as first responders.

The President further urged all citizens, especially those in vulnerable low-lying areas, to heed safety advisories and evacuate to safer shelters when necessary.

He went on to call on citizens to avoid open areas during storms, refrain from crossing flooded rivers, and stay informed through reliable weather updates, while artisanal miners were encouraged to suspend operations until conditions stabilise to prevent further tragedies.
