HARARE-PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has bade farewell to his former classmates from the University of Zambia (UNZA) law class of 1975, who were in Zimbabwe this week for a reunion.
The distinguished group, now each on separate career paths, reunited in Harare to relive fond memories and rekindle friendships formed nearly five decades ago during their formative years in Lusaka.
President Mnangagwa, who hosted his former classmates at State House, expressed joy at reconnecting with old friends, some of whom he had not seen in decades.
“These are my classmate, and I am so happy that they found time to come and see me. There is nothing so important in life that people you played with in life 50 years ago come and see me. I don’t know what I can reciprocate,” he said.
Among the visiting alumni was Zambian Justice Esau Chulu, a fellow student who fondly recalled their university days and light-heartedly remarked on the irony of their youthful days spent together with a future head of state.
“He thought he himself would be a President. You never know who you are playing with, who you are entertaining. We would drive around together in future. We are so grateful that our colleague made it to become a President,” he shared.
The emotional farewell followed a private engagement at State House this Wednesday, marking the conclusion of the nostalgic reunion.
As the group returned to their respective countries, they departed with treasured memories both old and newly made.
The gathering was a celebration of enduring friendship, professional achievement, and the timeless bonds forged in youth.
