President Mnangagwa attends AU Summit as leaders push for justice and African unity

SADC chairperson, President  Emmerson Mnangagwa is among African leaders attending the 38th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union underway at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Calls for African countries to get justice for past wrongs infringed on them through colonisation and apartheid were made at the Ordinary Session.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres addressed delegates and said the world must never forget that Africa is a victim to injustice stemming from colonialism.

Mr Guterres also spoke on the ravaging effects of climate change on African countries, despite Africa contributing the least to carbon emissions.

The outgoing African Union Commission chairperson, Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat made his last speech at the high-level meeting after serving in the position for the past eight years.

As he bade farewell, he expressed his gratitude to the AU member states for their unwavering support during his two terms in office.

He said it is key for Africa to heed the calls by the youths in the region to foster development and unity.

The official opening will see the launch of the 2025 African Union theme which is ‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations’ and the announcement of the new African Union Commission chairperson.
