President Mnangagwa arrives in Namibia for Presidential inauguration

Story by Bruce Chahwanda, Political Editor

SADC Chairperson, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has arrived in Windhoek to attend the inauguration of Namibia’s fifth President, coinciding with the country’s 35th Independence Day celebrations.

Upon arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, President Mnangagwa was welcomed by Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Namibia, Ambassador Melody Chaurura, embassy officials, and senior representatives from the host nation.

Namibia’s first female President-elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, is set to be sworn in this morning at the Independence Stadium.

Her inauguration follows her victory in the November elections, where she represented the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) and secured 57.31% of the vote, defeating 14 other candidates.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s triumph extends SWAPO’s rule in Namibia since independence in 1990.

She takes over from Nangolo Mbumba, who served as interim president following the passing of Namibia’s third president, Hage Geingob, in February last year.

Namibia gained independence from Germany in 1990, marking an era of self-governance and political stability in the Southern African nation.
