President Mnangagwa appoints new Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has promoted Lieutenant General Emmanuel Matatu to the rank of General and appointed him Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces with effect from 21 November 2025

In a statement, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Martin Rushwaya, said the appointment follows the retirement of General Philip Valerio Sibanda.

President Mnangagwa has also promoted Major General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him Commander Zimbabwe National Army with effect from the 25th of this month.

The appointment follows the promotion of outgoing Commander Zimbabwe National Army Lieutenant General Emmanuel Matatu to the rank of General and appointment to the position.
