The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) held a high-level joint meeting of its Bureaux, committees, and caucuses in Midrand, South Africa. The focus of this meeting was the legislative body’s budget proposals and related engagements for the 6th Pan-African Parliament.
PAP leadership committees and caucuses gathered in Midrand this Saturday, in preparation for the permanent committees session taking place on Monday.
Chief Fortune Charumbira, the president of PAP, emphasised the critical role of the PAP committees in overseeing the African Union’s development agenda.
“As an arm of the African Union, we are obliged to guide delivery to the citizens of Africa in several areas, be it health, transport, women, youth agriculture, etc, and oversee effective implementation by the organs of the African Union while promoting human rights, and democracy,” he said.
The theme ‘Silencing the Guns,’ aimed at achieving a conflict-free Africa, was also revisited.
“We have had the theme, ‘silencing the guns’, but it appears there is a lot more happening, we need to relook and ensure that we push for the best practices for Africa,” Chief Charumbira said.
Beyond budget deliberations, the meeting addressed pressing global and continental matters, including PAP’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict and UN Security Council reforms.
