THE Sixth Ordinary Session of the Sixth Pan-African Parliament (PAP) has commenced in Midrand, South Africa.

Running for the next two weeks, the session is being held under the African Union’s Theme of the Year: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.”

Proceedings began with the swearing-in of new legislators, followed by an address from PAP president, Chief Fortune Charumbira, who outlined the agenda for the session.

The PAP, which comprises 275 members drawn from all African Union member states, serves as a platform for legislators to deliberate on key continental issues and contribute to policy and decision-making aimed at advancing Africa’s development.

According to the PAP Rules of Procedure, the continental legislature is required to convene at least two plenary sessions each year.

During these sittings, members review reports from various committees and make recommendations to the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government on harmonised policies and legislation for the continent.
