THE weekend’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League action brought little cheer for Zimbabwe’s traditional football giants, as Highlanders, Dynamos, and CAPS United all failed to register wins, deepening concerns among their faithful.
In Bulawayo, Highlanders FC fell to league debutants MWOS in a shock home defeat, despite the recent dismissal of head coach Kelvin Kaindu.
The highly anticipated clash drew a strong crowd to Barbourfields Stadium, with many hoping for a turnaround in fortunes following Kaindu’s exit.
However, MWOS completed a season double over Bosso, taking full advantage of a costly defensive error by Achford Faira, whose blunder gifted the visitors the only goal of the match.
The defeat comes on the heels of internal instability, with Acting CEO Kindman Ndlovu having stepped down earlier in the week, citing a toxic working environment, further fuelling speculation that Bosso’s challenges extend beyond the pitch.
It was also a frustrating weekend for the other two members of the traditional big three.
Dynamos FC were held to a goalless draw by ZPC Kariba on Saturday, while CAPS United failed to find the back of the net in their stalemate with Green Fuel on Sunday.
After 18 rounds of matches, Dynamos remain on 17th position on the log, while CAPS United are 11th and Highlanders on 9th position.
Meanwhile, MWOS continued their fairy-tale run by reclaiming top spot on the log with 37 points, closely followed by defending champions Simba Bhora, who trail by a single point.
With half the season gone, pressure is mounting on the traditional powerhouses to rediscover form, while new challengers such as MWOS are increasingly setting the pace in what is shaping up to be a compelling campaign.
