New wave sweeps across Harare: Male grooming

Story by Farai Gwaze

A new wave is sweeping across Harare, as men make a great trek to barbershops, this time not only for haircuts but also pedicures and full body massages.

Barber shops have become more than just places where men go for a simple haircut. They are now sanctuaries with licensed professionals who are trained to cut, shave, and style head hair and beards.

‘Before your haircut, you need a good wash and scrub it keeps you fresh”. I prefer coming to my barber because someone else won’t know exactly what to do.”

“I always wanted to be a barber from a young age. I also knew that I wanted to select a market that has an appreciation of the finer things.
In some cases catering to a full body experience after a long day serves to help destress from day to day-to-day challenges of the modern man in the concrete jungle,” said a barber, Mr Mike Pabvabango.

“A good shave in a relaxed environment is all you need, this is a great experience”. I like to come for the massage and steam room. It’s very refreshing,” one of Pabvabango’s clients noted.

Businesswoman, Ms Hazvinei Ntini said, “I started this place for my male age mates who I know work hard and want a place to relax after a long day. It’s a place for the boys to come and enjoy.”

The month of love is upon us and this year it falls on a leap year, meaning it is the men who can look forward to being treated. Instead of the usual socks and tie, why not treat your loved one to a pampered experience?
