A local seed house has released two climate-proof wheat varieties for distribution under the Presidential Inputs Scheme this season.
With the government having confirmed that all inputs for the 2025 winter wheat season are readily available in the country, a local seed house has availed climate-proofed varieties for farmers this season.
“We are happy to present the two new varieties produced after extensive research- dubbed the Zambezi and Limpopo the two are climate-proof and produce between seven to eight tonnes per hectare. They are short-seasoned in that if planted on time they mature before the rains,” Production Manager – Valley Seed, Siamsipa Mwami said.
The seed will be distributed under the Presidential Inputs Scheme.
“As you can see the new seed is in stock, we have finished packing all the quantities required under the programme, and once given the green light by the government we will start delivering to all GMB depots,” the Technical Director for Valley Seed, Patrick Sajeni said.
The government has this year set a target of 120 000 hectares for wheat production with the Presidential Scheme expected to contribute 5 000 hectares in an effort to achieve wheat-based food security.
