HARARE – WARRIORS captain Marvelous Nakamba has challenged youngsters selected to represent the country at the 2025 COSAFA Cup to use the opportunity to launch their international careers.

The tournament kicks off on June 4, at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, where the Warriors are placed in Group A alongside hosts South Africa, Mauritius, and Mozambique.

The squad will be under the guidance of Young Warriors coach Simon Marange, and has been strategically assembled with a long-term view towards the 2028 Olympic Qualifiers, which commence next year.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Nakamba, who himself rose through the ranks of national junior teams, called on Zimbabwe’s young footballers to take full advantage of the opportunity.

“COSAFA offers a unique opportunity for one to establish themselves. I started playing junior tournaments at the age of 15, and by the time I graduated to the senior team, I was ready for it. This is an opportunity for these youngsters to raise their hands and market themselves. I hope they take it with both hands,” he said.

The youthful side will be captained by defender Andrew Mbeba, with MWOS goalkeeper Martin Mapisa named as vice-captain.

Emerging talents such as Prosper Padera, Mafios Chiweta, and Kuraishe Musanhi will be looking to cement their place in the national setup, while the likes of Junior Makunike, Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, and Allan Chapinduka are aiming to break into the senior team ranks.

Zimbabwe boasts a rich legacy at the COSAFA Cup, having won the tournament six times, just one behind record holders Zambia.

Despite not holding the record for most titles, the Warriors have the highest win percentage in tournament history at 57 %, surpassing South Africa 52 % and Zambia 49 %.

The Warriors open their campaign next week with a fixture against Mauritius, before taking on Mozambique and South Africa in what promises to be a fiercely contested group stage.
