Mutare based Jazz mjusician makes waves

Story by Kenias Chivuzhe

A rising Jazz artist from Mutare, Allen Kapswara, popularly known as Keple, has taken the music industry by storm after releasing a song focusing on the importance of faithfulness in relationships.

In a world where divorces have become the order of the day while adultery and domestic violence are threatening to rip the social fabric apart, upcoming jazz musician Allen Kapswara from Mutare has become the voice of the voiceless.

In a song aptly titled, “Tendeka” Kapswara implores couples to respect the sanctity of marriage.

The 22-year-old graduate from Great Zimbabwe University spoke on his latest offering after enlisting the services of veteran musician Clive ‘Mono” Mukundu.

“I recorded a track released last week and the song is called Tendeka. It focuses on marriages and how one can make a marriage to be stable. The song Tendeka is about a man telling his wife to be honest but the wife will also be telling the husband that you are the father of the house but it doesn’t give you permission to do gender based violence. In new marriages, some people get carried away and engage in adultery. Loyalty is the highest level for every man to love his wife,” he said.

The talented artist reveals that his inspiration comes from the late music icon Dr Oliver Mtukudzi.

“I had a passion for music ever since I was young and when I was in grade four I was playing the keyboard. When I was at Great Zimbabwe University that’s when I saw the late Dr Oliver Mutukudzi performing and I was inspired. I then started learning acoustic guitar. After I graduated I thought of venturing full time into music. I released my first track Tirinani with the assistance of Peter Muparutsa last year. I was motivated to do another track titled Hanyanisi at Nash Studios this year,” explained Kapaswara.

Keple is determined to add his name to the list of revered Zimbabwean jazz musicians such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Prudence Katomeni Mbofana, Enerst Tanga Wekwa Sando, August Musarurwa and Prince Musarurwa.
