ZIMBABWE and Zambia have lined up more trade agreements to strengthen existing bilateral ties.

The 4th Session of Zimbabwe, Zambia Joint Trade and Customs Committee (JTCC) held in Harare this Tuesday provided an opportunity for Zimbabwe and Zambia to take stock of economic development agreements.

While numerous agreements have been sealed since 2017, the need to implement the agreements is being considered important in boosting trade volumes.

“This is the first time that we are meeting since 2017 and this review therefore presents an opportunity to discuss further on what can be done to reinforce trade ties while creating that platform to enhance trade, so basically the need to identify challenges and facilitate the clear path to growth in the short to long term,” said Zambia’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr Derick Livune.

Zimbabwe has also reaffirmed commitment to strengthening trade with Zambia.

Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Rofina Chikava said, “This is the right platform to focus on trade and investment including focusing on what is needed to consolidate gains while we are taking stock of some outstanding issues. I am however, pleased by the level of commitment within the two parties to further broaden the scope of businesses.”

Some of the issues being discussed during the two-day session include a review of trade agreements, investment approvals, customs agreements, a proposed one stop border posts and power purchase agreements, among others.
