THE Zimbabwe Mighty Warriors kick off their 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship with a date against Mozambique at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in South Africa this Thursday.
Coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda has blended experience and youth, in her squad as Zimbabwe gun for their second COSAFA Women’s title.
The Mighty Warriors are led by prolific striker Ethel Chinyerere popularly known as ‘Haaland’.
The clinical finisher from Chapungu Queens will spearhead the attack alongside the speedy Maud Mafuruse from Herentals Queens.
Chinyerere has been a regular goal scorer in the Women Super league, but she has missed national team call ups due to injury.
Now fully fit and back to her usual best, a lot is expected of her judging by the lofty standards she has set.
Black Rhinos captain and utility player Christable Katona, Priveledge Mupeti and young Mitchell John are expected to provide options in terms of goals.
Maningi Youth Academy midfielder Tanyaradzwa Chihoro brings youthful energy and precision passing from midfield, while Peacemore Kenende, a foreign-based midfielder from Richmond Ladies of South Africa, provides flair and creativity.
The likes of Ennert Chemhere from FC Platinum Royals will control the tempo of the game from midfield.
Chapungu Queens’ Nobukhosi Ncube marshals the defense as captain, supported by Agness Tumbare from Herentals Queens while young Sheila Antonio from Chapungu Queens is one to look out for.
The Mighty Warriors have to be on the lookout for Mozambique, a side that has clearly been on the up and one of the dark horses at the tournament.
The top team from the group D which also features Lesotho will progress to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Meanwhile, some of the COSAFA Women’s Championship venues have been changed due to heavy rains in South Africa.
The Nelson Mandela Stadium, which was the main venue, suffered damage from heavy rains, while the second option, Gelvandale Stadium, also fell victim to the weather.
Zimbabwe’s opening match against Mozambique will now be played at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium this Thursday, while their last group match against Lesotho will be at the Madiba Stadium on Sunday.
