MIDLANDS State University (MSU) has successfully defended its Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition title after emerging victorious in the 18th edition of the prestigious global contest.
Representing the university, Prince Tinokunda Mafigu and Ruth Fadzai Jokonya outperformed teams from more than 100 universities worldwide to claim the championship.
Organised by the University of Pretoria’s Centre for Human Rights in partnership with the United Nations Human Rights Office and the African Commission, the competition promotes the study and application of international human rights law through a fictional case argued before judges using instruments such as United Nations conventions and the African Charter.
The final, held in Geneva, Switzerland, saw MSU defeat Kenya’s Strathmore University in an all-African contest.
The victory marks MSU’s second successive triumph after winning last year’s competition.
MSU Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Gift Manyatera, told ZBC News the achievement reflects the strength of legal education in Zimbabwe and across Africa.
The latest success reinforces Zimbabwe’s growing reputation for academic excellence and its ability to compete successfully against leading universities from around the world.
