Midlands benefit from Young Women 4ED goat pass-on scheme

Story by Courage Bushe

100 goats have been distributed in the Midlands Province under the Young Women 4ED goat pass-on scheme, which aims to empower rural communities and uplift livelihoods.

The organisation has launched the Presidential Goat Pass-on Scheme in Shurugwi district at Vungwi Primary School this Monday, where over 300 women from eight districts benefited from the scheme.

“These goats will play a crucial role in changing livelihoods, especially here in remote areas, and we want to thank the government for this initiative,” a beneficiary said.

Another said, “As young women, we are excited and hopeful for a better future from this gesture. This will surely empower us economically.”

Young Women 4ED National Chairperson, Honourable Tatenda Mavetera encouraged young women from the Midlands Province to take advantage of economic empowerment programmes being availed to them by government.

She said, “I want to take this opportunity to urge and implore ladies to take advantage of these government programmes. I believe this programme will leave you empowered economically.”

Government is convinced that the programme is in line with government’s efforts to achieve an upper-middle-income society by 2030.

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Owen Ncube said, “We are happy with programmes that are being spearheaded by Young Women 4ED because they complement the government’s vision of achieving an upper-middle-income society by 2030. This will also play a key role in countering the effects of climate change and improve livelihoods.”

The goat pass-on scheme was rolled out to boost the capacity of women small-scale farmers for them to be key players in the economic sector.
