MCAZ warns against purchase of counterfeit rabies vaccine on the market

Story by Peter Chivhima

THE Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued a warning regards a counterfeit version of the ABHAYRAB rabies vaccine circulating in the market through unauthorised sources.

In a circular released by MCAZ this Tuesday, the authority advised that the counterfeit product poses a significant threat to public health, as it may lack efficacy, contain harmful components and increase the risk of treatment failure in preventing rabies.

To protect the citizenry, the MCAZ is advising licensed wholesalers, pharmacies, public and private clinics, and hospitals to immediately quarantine any units of the counterfeit ABHYARAB rabies vaccine, stating that these quarantined units must be submitted to the Authority for proper disposal.

The MCAZ also implored the general public who may have purchased the falsified vaccine to return the product to the pharmacy where they obtained the medicine.
