PREPARATIONS for the 2026 National Independence Day celebrations, scheduled to be hosted in Maphisa, Matabeleland South, are progressing steadily, with authorities confirming that major infrastructure and logistical works are now at advanced stages.
With less than 100 days remaining before the national event, provincial leadership says coordination among government departments and stakeholders has intensified to ensure the commemorations are delivered on schedule.
Matabeleland South leaders have expressed cautious optimism, acknowledging progress made while calling for accelerated implementation in some areas to meet set deadlines.
Matobo Member of Parliament, Honourable Edgar Moyo, said the province was encouraged by the pace of work but urged contractors to quicken outstanding processes.
“We are happy with the work done so far, but we wish they speed up some of the processes so that we meet the deadline,” he said.
ZANU PF Matabeleland South Provincial Chairperson, Cde Mangaliso Ndhlovu, said the release of funding had enabled tangible progress, despite initial delays.
“We are happy that the funds have been released, the first tranche although it came late in December, and they have started receiving the materials. Besides other extreme weather conditions, we would have made good progress by the end of February,” Cde Ndhlovu said.
The Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe, said government was satisfied with the work on the ground and assured the nation that preparations were firmly on track.
“We have seen how far they have gone, and I think we need to speed up. We want to thank the team working here that they have done a good job. I am happy that the material has started arriving and by next week, they are going to get eight graders from other provinces,” Honourable Nguluvhe said.
The 2026 Independence Day celebrations are expected to bring significant infrastructural development to Maphisa and surrounding areas, while showcasing Matabeleland South’s cultural heritage and contribution to national development.
Provincial authorities say the focus remains on timely completion of all key facilities to ensure Matabeleland South hosts a memorable and well-organised national event.
