Mat North poised for further transformation

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

Matabeleland North province is set for significant growth this year, with several key projects nearing completion.

The Gwayi-Shangani Dam project is on track to achieve its target water catchment by the 2025-2026 rainfall season, pending the release of funding from Treasury.

The province also anticipates the opening of Lupane General Hospital, its largest referral hospital, with phased commissioning scheduled for the end of the year.

Additionally, the rehabilitation and construction of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road is underway, with contractor Bitumen World currently repairing potholes. Full-scale reconstruction will commence after the end of the rainfall season.

“We have solar plant projects that are nearing completion. We are pleased that His Excellency the President will commission these projects during the year. Many devolution projects, including schools and clinics are progressing well. We look forward to their completion with the support of devolution funds allocated to the province this year,” said Minister of State for Provincial Affairs & Devolution, Matabeleland North Province, Hon Richard Moyo.

Devolution funds and foreign direct investment are poised to significantly boost the province’s Gross Domestic Product.

“As a province, we are attracting more investors to establish coal, gold, and power plants. Recently, the President conducted a ground-breaking ceremony for a new power plant in the province. We eagerly anticipate the arrival of more investors to further develop our industrial sector. We also look forward to the continued growth of the tourism sector. We expect to see an increase in tourism players and a greater number of airlines operating flights to Victoria Falls, our premier tourist destination. This will undoubtedly drive significant economic growth for the province,” said Hon Moyo.

These milestones are expected to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents of Matabeleland North Province.
